  Interview with Gaetano Degabriele

Born:
Marsa 19 May 1957

Status:
Married to Rosalyn. Two children Matthew and Rueben

Hobbies:
Only football really. I enjoy some gardening. I spend a lot of time with my two sons, helping them on researching various projects connected with their studies.

Favourite food:
I like all food. I don’t really have any special preference.

Favourite Music:
I prefer songs of some years ago.

Favourite foreign country:
I have visited many and each one has different characteristics.

Favourite foreign referee;
There is no one really because you can note quality and a distinctive capability in all referees both foreign and local.

Started Active refereeing:
I used to organise 7 a side summer league for members and old boys of the Catholic Action in Marsa called ‘Circolo San Frangisk t’Assisi. It was always difficult to find referees and to find the money to pay them so I decided to stop playing a nd followed a course in refereeing organized by the MFA. I passed and started by career. My first match was on 13 October 1985 in a match for the Sliema Sports Association.

Problems;
well one must be prepared to make sacrifices to continue a referee’s career. There is the question of mental and physical preparation, a continual revision of the Laws of the Game, personal discipline as to the places of entertainment one can visit and of course one must have the full support of one’s family.

Best local football match:
There were various.. It is not always the actual match. It could be a great goal which you remember or a gesture, both a positive or a negative one. However, the Trophy Final last year between Sliema and Marsaxlokk was my last match and a day before my birthday.

Best international:
My first match with Charles Agius as referee was the Intertoto Cup match between FC Crete nd Tervis Parnu and my last one with Lorry Sammut as referee in 2002 which was the Under 21 match between England and Macedonia.

Then of course there was the match in 2000 between Italy and Portugal where I also met the legendary Dino Zoff who I admired when I was young. One also remembers stadia like Ibrox and White Heart Lane and Sarajevo in Bosnia Herzegovina because of certain memories.

Disappointment:
That I started my referee’s career late and I frankly say that especially in the early part of my career I was not given my fair share of matches. This had an affect on my career. I did not like it that some colleagues, even present day referees, pretended to be my friends, and then passed remarks which damaged me and made them look good with certain people.

Advice to young referees:
The first thing that they must remember that they have to work hard to keep at the top especially if they were promoted at young age. They must take advice from their seniors and accept criticism. They must work for the god of the game and not for personal glory.
