St. Peter :

In the Bible, Simon is pictured as an intimate friend of Jesus, and to his followers. In fact, we can see Jesus taking with him Simon, James and John. If we take the transfiguration and the agony Garden of Getsemane, one can see this fact: “Then Jesus along with his disciples arrived in a place called Getsemane” were he said to his disciples: “Stay here until I go praying”. He took Simon, James and John along with him…” (Mathew 26:36/37). The Love that Simon had towards Jesus Christ was oftenly changed to worse. Once, during the first news of the Passion, Peter challenged Jesus, even if this was because of his enormous love towards him. In this case Jesus called him ‘Devil’. If we look at the believes of Peter, one could see that this was an enormous one. “O lord, if this is you, order me to come near you on the waters”. But his doubts did not make him arrive near him, and to this Jesus scolded him very angrily: “You human of small believes, why did you doubt me?” (Mathew 14:28/31).

An important point in the life of Simon Peter and in the life of the Catholic Church, is when we read Mathew’s gospel (Chapter 16, Verses 13-20), were we can see our lord who wanted to build his church on someone who is strong. In fact he changed the name of Simon from Simon son of Gona to Kefa – which means Pietru (rock). And afterwards, Christ made him the first Pope of the Church….”And I am telling you, you are Peter, and on this rock I shall build my first church. I will give you the keys to heaven and all that is done on earth is done in heaven”.

Peter thought he was no believer and that Jesus was perfect. He also thought that it was not nice that Jesus sometimes lowered himself. An example of this is when on Thursday Jesus wanted to wash Peter’s feet: “It will never be that you wash my feet!” To this Jesus, Jesus answered him: “If I do not wash your feet, you will never have to do anything with me!” Peter answered back by saying: “O Jesus, not only my feet, but my hands and my head also!” (John 13:8/9)
If we look at Peter during the solemn moments of Jesus Christ’s passion, one can find that he was afraid. Of all the Apostles, all that remained with Jesus was only Saint John. But the first one to see the grave empty when Jesus resurrected, was Simon: “Then Simon Peter entered the empty grave were he saw the remainings scattered on the floor”. After this, Peter, together with the Apostles who were afraid from the Jews secured themselves in the room were the last supper took place just a few moments before. They remained there until fifty days later. He then went out preaching and teaching and all those who listened remained astonished. He was understandable in all languages. Peter left Jerusalem, were then he became a missionary. He became the first bishop of Siria and also the first bishop of Rome. This in certainty shows that he was the first pope. Peter is also named the Apostle of the Jews. It is also said that he was an ambassador between the Jews (conservatives) – by Saint James and the Greek (liberal) – by Saint Paul.
